Acer V.'T Holtlaand (Acer)  was born in Holland  in April 1997, at the home of Dutch Griffon Breeder Eric V/D Schouw of Kennel Van'T Holtlaand.    We are very impressed with these Dutch bloodlines and in particular very pleased with Acer.  It was a big commitment to bring a Griffon in from overseas, and we are thrilled that Mr. V/D. Schouw sent us such a fine dog.   In 2000, we imported a second Griffon from Mr. V/D Schouw, Larix V.'T Holtlaand.  We are now looking at importing a third Griffon from Holland.

For a few years, I had been eager to bring a new hunting line to Canada  to introduce into our breeding program, and had been researching the different possibilites for some time.  We chose this male after considering available litters and researching the Griffon Club E.v. stud books and test results for dogs in the pedigrees.  Additionally, Acer's  sire Ned. & Int. Kamp. Banco V.D. Berkelvalle  is one of the most beautiful hunting Griffons I have seen.  His dam, Varna is an elegant and willing Griffonne.

Acer  has been a delightful Griffon to raise and prepare for hunting.  He is a very athletic Griffon, but is more of a square profile.  He has a beautiful head, and his expression is that of intelligence and eagerness.   He has a marked way of working the field.   Acer is a very aggressive hunter, has an excellent nose, instant and intense point, excellent marking abilities, and a quick, willing retrieve.  This young dog promises to be a hard driving hunter, with the heart, desire and determination that it takes to get the job done.

Acer is not a dog that can be left in our backyard unattended.  Our backyard is adjacent to our bird pen area, which houses our quail, pigeons, chukar and pheasant.  As well, our poultry and rabbits are kept in this area, which is for the most part - dog proof.  Except for Acer, who can figure out how to get through gates, and while out on his own, he managed to get into bird pens on almost all occasions.  In one other occasion, he almost chewed through a wood fence to get to some rabbits, and on a third, he pulled up chain link with his teeth in order to get closer to our geese.  He has so much drive and desire, there is no pen that can keep birds safe from him.

We expect that his strengths will continue to combine well with our bloodlines and be evident in future generations of Griffonpoint Griffons.   Acer has been test bred with our foundation bitch Ch Checkered Meg.  Due to Meg's age she had been "retired" and we hadn't expected to breed her again, but after we saw how well Acer would match her, we decided that we would like to ensure that her qualities could be brought forward into this new, exciting generation with Acer's qualities.... so this was her final litter, and we were blessed with two promising puppies - Griffonpoint Boss, and Griffonpoint Purdy (NA Prize III).
